Every single member of the party should carry one and ten bolts to go with it. You never know when you're going to run into stirges, dire bats, heck, a harpy even, and when you do, good ol' trusty Light Crossbow is there to help you out, plinking away happily while saying, "Range mod? Not on a map *this* size! Whee!" That means you threaten, and when you threaten, well, you're a threat. Most DMs I've encountered will let you use a crossbow as a club, but at the very worst it's an improvised club in-hand in addition to being a ranger weapon. Cold iron works as well, while a single quiver of ten bolts is perfect for a cast ing of Magic Weapon, letting the whole group take a couple and plink away at the critter dejour. Party of five? Grab ten silve rbolts, give everyone two, and when something werewolfy shows up, you know everybody's got a shot at hurting it. At low levels, it's teh Swiss Army Knife, since you can buy silver and cold iron bolts cheaply and spread them around. (And, just between us, they probably don't need it.)Įasy to plink and fire, not that heavy when given ten bolts, but it's always handy to have around. Specs: Speed - 405 Feet Per Second Kinetic Energy - 134-FT-LB Trigger - 3.5-LB. The only class that can't is the Druid but that actually makes sense. The Fierce 405 is The Best Crossbow for Hunting Whether Your A Seasoned. CLerics? Wizards? Heck, Bards and even MONKS can whip out a crossbow. The LIght Crossbow is the one weapon that everybody can use. PS: All of the above is just noodling around and shouldn't be taken as an endorsement that you should make a crossbow character of course Some sort of character using a Large one of those (3d8) would be kinda cool, though most Large characters get Str bonuses so its hard to get it to work. Races of stone has the 'great crossbow', which likewise exotic (2d8 with 18-20 threat range, full round action reload. The wielder still has to aim the weapon at the right square. A seeking weapon veers toward its target, negating any miss chances that would otherwise apply, such as from concealment. This special ability can only be placed on ranged weapons. It wasn't optimization so much as doing something loony with random L1 spell slots I didn't care about. Price +1 bonus Aura strong divination CL 12th Weight. The best use for those is perhaps if you can pull out a free exotic weapon proficiency (like with the bard/wizard spell master's touch in Complete Adventurer).I had a bard that could do that though his Str/BAB was high and he eventually found a +3 bow, at which point I switched to that instead. I occasionally try thinking about doing something with double crossbows, though these are an exotic weapon. I guess since the damage range is balanced without considering Str bonus to damage, and that its a simple weapon.
